First Love
A sixteen-year-old at a summer dacha falls for the impoverished princess next door, five years older, who keeps a court of grown men and enrols him in it for sport. He sets himself to work out which of the suitors she actually loves, and learns what jealousy is before he has learned anything else. Turgenev said it was the only thing he wrote taken straight from life, and it stayed his own favourite among his works.
