Cousin Phillis

Elizabeth Gaskell · 1864 CE · Novel · English · Victorian

Paul Manning, a young engineer sent to survey a railway line, boards near the farm of his mother's cousin, an independent minister who works his own land and reads Virgil between the furrows. The minister's daughter, seventeen and taller than Paul, is drawn instead to the worldly colleague Paul brings out to the house. Gaskell's quietest work sets a country household's Sunday order against the line being cut through it.
