Sylvia's Lovers
In a Yorkshire whaling port during the Napoleonic wars, a specksioneer back from the Greenland seas courts a farmer's daughter while her steady Quaker cousin, a clerk in her uncle's shop, watches and waits. The press-gang works the harbour, a riot follows, and one man's silence about what he saw disposes of three lives. Gaskell called it the saddest story she ever wrote, and built it on interviews with old Whitby people who still remembered the gangs.
