A Farewell to Arms

Ernest Hemingway · 1929 CE · Novel · Modern / American · Modernist

Frederic Henry, an American serving with the Italian ambulance corps on the Isonzo, is blown up in a dugout eating cheese and falls in with Catherine Barkley, an English nurse at the Milan hospital. He goes back to the front in time for the retreat from Caporetto, where the battle police are shooting officers at the bridgehead, and he walks out of the war. Hemingway rewrote the last page thirty-nine times.
