All Quiet on the Western Front
Talked into enlisting by a schoolmaster's patriotic lectures, Paul Bäumer and his classmates reach the Western Front to find their training useless and their world narrowed to the men beside them. Between bombardments they scavenge food, tend wounds and take leave in households that cannot hear a word they say. Remarque's account of the ordinary German infantryman sold in the millions within a year and was burned by the Nazis four years later.
