To Have and Have Not

Ernest Hemingway · 1937 CE · Novel · Modern / American · Modernist

Harry Morgan runs a charter boat out of Key West through the Depression, and when a client skips on the bill he starts carrying Chinese labourers, then rum, then Cuban revolutionaries with a bank robbery behind them. Chapters cut away to the yacht basin, where writers and heiresses lie awake in their berths on the other side of the same water. Assembled out of two magazine stories and a third of new material, and the only one of his novels set in the United States.
