To Have and Have Not

Howard Hawks · 1944 CE · Film · Modern / American · Contemporary

A charter-boat captain in Vichy Martinique takes tourists out for marlin and stays clear of politics, until a hotel owner offers money to run two Free French passengers past the harbour patrol. An American drifter who sings with the house pianist attaches herself to him and picks pockets on his behalf. Hawks took it on after betting Hemingway he could make something of his worst book, and introduced Lauren Bacall at nineteen.
