Scarface (Hawks)

Howard Hawks · 1932 CE · Film · Modern / American · Modernist

An ambitious hood shoots his way up Prohibition Chicago's bootlegging trade, marking each killing with an X and guarding his sister with a jealousy the film barely veils. Loosely built on Armitage Trail's 1930 novel, absent from this archive, and on Capone's career, it is the fiercest of the pre-Code gangster cycle, held back a year by censors who demanded the subtitle 'The Shame of the Nation'.
