All the King's Men
Willie Stark, a county treasurer who reads law at night and loses his first campaign, learns he was run only to split the country vote and starts talking to the hicks as one of them. Elected governor, he builds hospitals and roads, buys legislators by the handful, and keeps a newspaperman and a bodyguard close as an impeachment gathers. Rossen cast unknowns and locals and cut four hours to under two; it took Best Picture.
