Anthills of the Savannah

Chinua Achebe · 1987 CE · Novel · Nigerian · Contemporary

Three men who went through the same school in the West African state of Kangan now hold it between them — one is His Excellency, one edits the national paper, one is Commissioner for Information — and a referendum the President expected to win has gone the wrong way in a drought-stricken province. The narration passes between the three and then to Beatrice, a senior Finance official who reads all of them more accurately than they read each other. Achebe's first novel in twenty-one years, shortlisted for the Booker, and the one that moves a woman to the centre of the argument.
