Nathu, a tanner in a Punjab town, is paid five rupees by a man he does not dare refuse to kill a pig after dark and is told it is wanted by the veterinary surgeon; by morning the carcass is lying on the steps of the mosque. Over the days that follow the town arms itself street by street while the British deputy commissioner files his reports, the Congress peace committee meets, and the outlying villages find themselves alone. Sahni saw the Rawalpindi killings of 1947 at first hand, and wrote the novel the Sahitya Akademi honoured and Govind Nihalani filmed as a television serial.
