Iyaruingam

Birendra Kumar Bhattacharya · 1960 CE · Novel · Indian · Contemporary

In the Tangkhul Naga country around Ukhrul and Kohima, three friends come out of the Japanese invasion and the end of British rule into a place that has to decide what it now is: Rishang works for people's rule inside the new Indian settlement, Khating serves whichever army is in power, and Phanitphang takes up arms for Naga self-determination. Around them are Videselie, a Christian organiser of the nationalist underground, and Sharengla, ostracised by her own village for what the war did to her, who becomes the link between village society and the movement. It took the first Sahitya Akademi award given in Assamese, and is reckoned the earliest sustained treatment in any language of the Naga struggle for sovereignty.
