The Battle of Algiers

Gillo Pontecorvo · 1966 CE · Film · Italian · Contemporary

Between 1954 and 1957 the FLN builds a cell network in the Casbah of Algiers, and France answers with paratroopers under a colonel who explains his methods to the press without embarrassment. Recruitment, checkpoints, bombings, strikes and interrogations are staged with newsreel plainness and not a frame of archive footage. Bombs and torture given the same unblinking camera.
