Set in a small Uttar Pradesh town in 1942, it follows ordinary residents drawn into the Quit India movement and the police repression that answers it. Amarkant, himself a participant in the freedom struggle, writes from remembered experience rather than retrospective myth. The Hindi novel won the Sahitya Akademi Award in 2007, and he received the Jnanpith in 2009.
