Dark Fields of the Republic
A place between two stands of trees where the grass grows uphill is described carefully and then withheld, because this is not Russia and these are not those times. Letters written to the dead of the 1930s, a woman crossing a desert town called Calle Vision, and six narratives that refuse to resolve carry the argument about what a citizen owes a history she did not choose. The title is lifted from the last page of Fitzgerald's novel, and Rich turns the phrase toward the country's unlit interior rather than its promise.
