Diving into the Wreck

Adrienne Rich · 1973 CE · Poem · Modern / American · Contemporary

Having read the book of myths and loaded the camera, a solitary diver goes down the ladder in flippers and mask to see the damage that was done and the treasures that prevail, wanting the wreck itself rather than the story of the wreck. Around that descent stand poems of a marriage ending, of rape, and of anger given its own phenomenology. Rich accepted the 1974 National Book Award for it only jointly, in the name of all women, with Alice Walker and Audre Lorde.
