Ariel
Sylvia Plath · 1965 CE · Poem · Modern / American · Contemporary
Forty poems written mostly in the last months of a life, many of them at four in the morning before the children woke, in a voice that had stopped asking permission. Bees, horses, hospitals and a father recur; the speaker addresses her tormentors directly and sometimes with contempt. Assembled and reordered after her death by her husband, it made confessional verse a public form and remains contested in both its arrangement and its reception.
