Daddy

Sylvia Plath · 1965 CE · Poem · Modern / American · Contemporary

A speaker addresses a father dead since she was ten as a black shoe she has lived in for thirty years, a marble-heavy statue with one grey toe, a German whose language sticks in her throat like barb wire. The address slides from a Polish town she cannot locate, through Dachau and Belsen, to a man in black she married in his image. Written in October 1962 as her marriage broke.
