Hunger
An unnamed young man walks the streets of Kristiania with nothing in him, pawning his waistcoat and then his blanket, giving away what little the pawnbroker hands over, and filing articles a newspaper may or may not take. Hunger sharpens him into euphoria, invented words and elaborate performances for a woman he follows and names Ylajali, then drops him back down into the cold. Written without plot, chapters or moral by a man who had done the starving himself, and offered as a literature of the unconscious mind against the social novel of Ibsen's generation.
