Victoria

Knut Hamsun · 1898 CE · Novel · Nordic · Modernist

The miller's son and the daughter of the manor grow up on the same stretch of water, and when he comes back a published poet the distance between a mill and a castle has not moved an inch. She is promised elsewhere, he writes books she reads, and each of them says the wrong thing at every meeting that might have settled it. Hamsun's shortest novel and his most read, a love story told in scenes years apart with the analysis stripped out of them.
