Delusions, Confusions

Theodor Fontane · 1888 CE · Novel · German · Victorian

A cavalry officer of good family and a laundress's foster daughter spend a summer between a market garden on the edge of Berlin and an inn out at Hankels Ablage, both of them clear from the first about what a Prussian regiment and an encumbered estate will permit. Neither makes a scene, and the second half follows what each of them does with the rest of a life. Serialised in the Vossische Zeitung over complaints from shareholders that a respectable paper had no business printing a story about a seamstress.
