Before the Storm

Theodor Fontane · 1878 CE · Novel · German · Victorian

Christmas 1812 in the Oderbruch, with the Grand Army coming back frozen out of Russia and the Brandenburg gentry arguing over whether to rise against the French before their king gives them leave to. Most of it is talk - at a manor table, in a Berlin salon, in a village schoolroom, around a Polish countess with a circle of her own - and the raid that finally comes off is a small and badly managed affair. Fontane was fifty-eight and had spent twenty years as a travel writer and war correspondent; this first novel he built deliberately on Walter Scott.
