In 2001 Philipp Erlach clears out the Viennese villa of his dead grandparents and, through chapters running backward, the novel recovers three generations of the family from the Anschluss onward. The war, the economic recovery and the family's silences are told through domestic scenes. It won the first Deutscher Buchpreis.
