The House by the Medlar Tree

Giovanni Verga · 1881 CE · Novel · Italian · Victorian

The Malavoglia of Aci Trezza own their boat and the house by the medlar tree, and a single cargo of lupins taken on credit begins the accounting that will claim both. Padron 'Ntoni holds the family to proverbs while his grandsons look toward the mainland and the conscription lists, and the village chorus comments on every loss with the satisfaction of people who predicted it. Verga planned it as the first of five novels on the defeated and handed the narration over completely to the voices of the place.
