Little Novels of Sicily

Giovanni Verga · 1883 CE · Short Story · Italian · Victorian

Twelve stories out of the Sicilian interior: a man who has spent a lifetime acquiring land and cannot take it with him, a village that answers Garibaldi's arrival by killing its gentry and is answered in turn, malaria settling over the plain like a tax. The narration stays inside the reasoning of people for whom property and hunger are the only two facts. Harder and colder than the coastal stories, and the closest Verga came to writing history.
