Cavalleria Rusticana
Turiddu comes back from his military service to find the girl he left married to the village carter, and takes up instead with a neighbour's daughter whose dowry his mother approves of. What follows is conducted almost entirely in the grammar of a Sicilian village — who greets whom in the square, who is asked inside, and the formal way one man asks another to meet him at dawn. Verga strips the narrator out completely and lets the code speak for itself; Mascagni's opera four years later made it the most famous Sicilian story in Europe.
