Mastro-don Gesualdo
A mason from Vizzini works himself into ownership of half the land around the town and buys, with the rest, a wife out of the ruined nobility who despises him for it. Neither the peasants he came from nor the barons he married into will have him, and his daughter is raised to be ashamed of the money that raised her. The second of the Vinti novels moves the defeat one rung up the ladder, where the prize turns out to cost more than the poverty did.
