The Drum of the Waves of Horikawa

Chikamatsu Monzaemon · 1707 CE · Play · Japanese · Enlightenment

Otane keeps her husband's house through the year he is away on attendance duty in Edo, and the drum master engaged to give lessons in the household is left alone with her after a night of sake. What follows is not something she can settle privately: her husband is a samurai, the code of his clan leaves him no discretion, and the servants already know. Chikamatsu took the case from a real scandal and set the machinery of honour running against people who would rather it stopped.
