The Love Suicides at Amijima
Jihei, an Osaka paper merchant with a wife, two children, and no credit left, cannot give up Koharu of the Kinokuniya, whom a richer man is arranging to ransom out of the quarter; Koharu, written to privately by Jihei's wife Osan, has begun refusing him without saying why. An evening of eavesdropping at a latticed window, a brother-in-law in a wicker hat, and a chanted travel passage over the bridges carry the two of them out of the city after midnight. The most admired of the domestic tragedies Chikamatsu devised for the puppet stage, in which obligation and feeling are set against each other with no third term on offer.
