Atsumori

Zeami Motokiyo · c. 1400 CE · Play · Japanese · Medieval

Kumagai, the Genji warrior who killed a boy of sixteen on the beach at Ichi-no-tani and could not afterwards forget the flute found on the body, has taken orders and walked back to the place to pray for him. A grass-cutter falls in with him at dusk, asks for those prayers on his own account, and returns after dark in another shape. Zeami's dream-play method at its purest, and the reason the Heike wars survive on the Japanese stage as a dance performed by the defeated.
