Ugetsu

Kenji Mizoguchi · 1953 CE · Film · Japanese · Contemporary

In a Japan torn by civil war, two peasants leave their village with their wives, one chasing profit from his pottery and the other set on becoming a samurai. In the city the potter is taken up by a noblewoman of the Kutsuki house, and the would-be soldier buys his armor by dishonest means. Ambition punished at domestic scale, in ghost-story form.
