Lamia
Hermes, hunting a nymph through the woods of Crete, strikes a bargain with a serpent of dazzling colours who knows where the nymph is hidden and wants a woman's body in exchange. Restored, she takes a young Corinthian home to a palace nobody in the city had ever noticed, and insists that his old philosophy tutor not be asked to the wedding. Keats found the whole story in a paragraph of Burton's Anatomy of Melancholy quoting Philostratus, and made it the title piece of his last volume.
