Endymion
A shepherd prince on Mount Latmos, sick with a dream of a shining woman who visits him in sleep, leaves his flocks and his sister's care to follow her down under the earth, through the sea and up into the air. On the way he finds Adonis asleep among his attendants, hears Glaucus tell of a thousand years' servitude to Circe, and is pulled between the goddess and an Indian maid he pities. Keats began it in 1817 as a deliberate test of whether he could sustain four thousand lines, and the Quarterly's attack on the result became the occasion of Shelley's elegy.
