Orlando Furioso
Charlemagne's paladins are pinned outside Paris by the Saracen host, and the best of them rides away from the war altogether because Angelica has fled east and he means to have her. What he learns on the road unhinges him, and it takes a companion's flight to the moon, where everything lost on earth is kept in jars, to go looking for what he mislaid. Ariosto picked up the poem Boiardo left unfinished and spent thirty years enlarging it into forty-six cantos in which every pursuit is cut away from just before it resolves.
