On First Looking into Chapman's Homer
The speaker has travelled much in the realms of gold and seen many goodly states and kingdoms, but had only ever been told of the wide expanse ruled by deep-brow'd Homer until he heard Chapman speak out loud and bold. The discovery arrives as two images of first sight: an astronomer when a new planet swims into his ken, and a conquistador staring at the Pacific from a peak in Darien. Keats wrote it at dawn in October 1816 after sitting up all night with Charles Cowden Clarke over George Chapman's Elizabethan translation.
