New Tales of the Golden Turtle

Kim Si-seup · c. 1470 CE · Short Story · Korean · Renaissance

Five tales by a prodigy who refused office after a usurpation and spent his life moving between mountain temples. A student meets a girl at a Buddhist hall on a festival night and only later learns how she died; another is summoned underground to argue theology with the king of the dead; a third is carried to a dragon palace to compose a dedication for a new pavilion. Kim modelled the collection on Qu You's New Tales Under the Lamplight, and Korean fiction begins here.
