Manfred

Lord Byron · 1817 CE · Play · English · Romantic

Alone in a Gothic gallery at midnight in the high Alps, a nobleman calls up the seven spirits of the elements and asks them for forgetfulness, which is the single thing they cannot give him. He refuses the abbot's absolution, is talked down from the Jungfrau by a chamois hunter, and has himself carried to the hall of Arimanes to demand sight of the dead Astarte and an answer about a guilt he will not name aloud. Byron called it a dramatic poem never intended for the stage; Goethe read it as his own Faust taken up and made over.
