Faust, Part One
A scholar who has exhausted every branch of learning and found none of it satisfying makes a wager with Mephistopheles: the devil will serve him until the moment he asks time to stand still. What follows is a tour of appetite and worldly power, beginning with a young woman named Gretchen. Knowledge and experience bought with the soul; the wager that damnation might yet be outrun.
