Roman Elegies

Goethe · 1795 CE · Poem · German · Romantic

Twenty pieces in elegiac couplets set in a Rome the speaker learns by daylight among the ruins and by night in a rented room with a young Roman woman. He taps out hexameters on her back while she sleeps, and the antiquities, the guidebooks and the affair answer one another. Written after the Italian journey and held back for years because Weimar was not ready for how plainly a court poet had described the body.
