Hermann and Dorothea
A column of refugees driven east across the Rhine by the revolutionary armies passes a small German town, and the innkeeper sends his son to the road with a cartload of linen and food. The son gives all of it to a girl walking at the head of the train and comes home unable to speak of anything else, while his father wants a match with money. Nine cantos of German hexameter named for the Muses, and Goethe's most popular publication in his lifetime.
