Pan Tadeusz
Two neighbouring families in the Lithuanian countryside of 1811 quarrel over a ruined castle, while a young man back from school in Wilno cannot tell which of two women he has fallen for and a Bernardine friar moves between the manors on errands he will not explain. Napoleon's army is massing on the border and the local gentry are waiting for a signal, sharpening old grievances in the meantime. Mickiewicz wrote it in Paris exile, telling a correspondent in December 1832 that he was at work on a poem of life among the gentry in the style of Hermann and Dorothea.
