Gabriela, Clove and Cinnamon
In a cacao port on the Bahian coast in 1925, a record harvest brings a modernizer down from Rio who wants the sandbar dredged and the harbour opened to ocean shipping, against a colonel who has run the town's votes for decades. A Syrian bar owner short of a cook hires a girl out of the square where drought refugees stand for hire, and finds she cooks like nobody else in Ilhéus and will not be kept indoors. Amado's turn from the proletarian novels of his communist years to comedy, and one of the two or three books of his that carried him to a general readership.
