The Painter of Signs
Raman letters shop signs to order in Malgudi, argues with himself about reason and rationality, and takes a commission from a woman running family-planning clinics in the villages beyond the town. Riding out on a bullock cart to paint slogans about small families, he finds she will not be courted on any terms he recognises. Written during the Emergency, when the sterilisation drive was at its most coercive, though the book keeps its eye on the two people in the cart.
