The Vendor of Sweets
Jagan sells sweets in Malgudi, spins his own cloth, carries a chapter of the Gita in his pocket and quietly banks the takings he does not declare. His son returns from an American writing course with a fiancée nobody was told about and a proposal to manufacture a machine that produces short stories, for which he needs his father's capital. One of the late Malgudi comedies, and the sharpest on the collision between Gandhian self-denial and imported ambition.
