The Bachelor of Arts

R. K. Narayan · 1937 CE · Novel · Indian · Modernist

Chandran finishes his degree, argues in the debating hall that historians are humbugs, and sees a girl on the river sand whose horoscope will not match his. Refused by both sets of parents, he leaves town and spends months as a wandering ascetic with a shaved head, an experiment he conducts with exactly the earnestness he brought to college politics. Narayan's second Malgudi book, and the one in which his comedy of thwarted young men found its temperature.
