The English Teacher

R. K. Narayan · 1945 CE · Novel · Indian · Modernist

Krishna teaches Shakespeare to bored undergraduates, lives in a college hostel, and is happiest once his wife and small daughter come from her parents' house to make a home with him. Typhoid arrives with the drains of a house they were considering, and the rest of the book is his attempt to keep speaking to her, first through a medium and then alone with a pencil. Narayan wrote it out of his own wife's death from typhoid in 1939, and the book is nearer to record than to invention.
