The Dark Room
Savitri keeps house for a husband who settles every question by ending it, and shuts herself in the windowless storeroom when she has no other answer. An insurance saleswoman joins his office and he stops troubling to hide it, and Savitri walks out with nothing, discovering how few doors open to a woman with no money and three children behind her. Narayan's third book and the only one told wholly from a wife's side of an Indian marriage.
