The Home and the World
A Bengali landowner brings his wife out of the women's quarters to meet the world, and the world arrives in the person of his old friend, a Swadeshi agitator who wants her devotion and her husband's money for the boycott. Three narrators take the story in turn, and none is reliable about the fires being lit in the market or the Muslim traders who cannot afford the burning of foreign cloth. Lukács dismissed it as a libel on the independence movement; Tagore returned his knighthood three years later over the Amritsar massacre.
