Kabuliwala

Rabindranath Tagore · 1892 CE · Short Story · Indian · Victorian

A Kabuli fruit-seller peddling asafoetida and raisins in a Calcutta lane befriends a talkative five-year-old, and her writer father watches the friendship from his desk. Years and a prison term intervene, and the pedlar comes back to the house on a day the family has other business. Among the most translated of Tagore's Bengali stories, and one of the pieces that made his reputation as the founder of modern Bengali prose fiction.
