The Crescent Moon
Forty short lyrics in the alternating voices of a small child and the mother watching him: the baby's own account of where he came from, the game of hiding where he wants to be found, the merchant who will not sail because he cannot leave her. They were written for adults, in the sentimental register Tagore's English readership of the period wanted from him. For two generations of English schoolrooms this was the book that made him a poet of childhood rather than the polemicist of Bengal.
